notebook batteries

How long do notebook batteries last? I have a 1 year old Toshiba and
it won't hold a charge at all. I have hardly used the battery itself,
most of the time the laptop is plugged into a/c. Could this have
shortened its lifespan? The web price for batteries is around
$75...seems a little steep. Is there a third party battery that works
longer available, as I see batteries have improved steadily in the
last 18 months.
