OfficeJet 5510 software install fails

My client got a webcam, so she unplugged her OfficeJet 5510 (previously working
OK), and installed the webcam software, then used the webcam. Afterward, she
unplugged the webcam and reconnected the USB cable for the OfficeJet.

The system is an HP notebook with 2 USB ports, one used for a Bluetooth mouse.

When she plugged in the OfficeJet USB cable, the system recognized it, and tried
to install the software. The install failed because it could not find the
printer driver.

This afternoon, I cam by, uninstalled the previous instance of the OfficeJet
software, then attempted reinstalling it using both the download from the HP
website and the original CD. Reinstallation failed with the same message that
no software driver could be found. I also tried some basic cleanup, deleting
whatever old HP printer software I could find. Still no luck.

I went to the HP web site and found a web page where you could supposedly
download a cleanup program for your model of OfficeJet. For the 5510, instead
of a program, there is a lengthy and involved procedure to delete lots of files
and folders, more than I had done earlier today.

Simply stated, this really sucks. HP's software developers seem to be
incompetent to write a flawless software install that does not trip itself up
over whatever junk was left behind by a previous instance. Worse yet, the
uninstall software is incapable of doing a proper uninstall, leaving a lot of
stuff behind instead.

Now that I've explained what I did today and dumped all over HP for its wretched
software (not the first time I've seen this sort of mess!), anybody seen this
sort of thing before and got a solution?

The HP forums require a lot of time to fill out forms to register to post
messages, and I've run out of patience today! ... Ben Myers

Have you tried a restore to a point in time before you installed the webcam
software? This presumes your client is running XP or has some third party
rollback application.

This is an option I had not considered. It may be worth a try. Thank you.

The response last night from HP tech support to my query was written in the best
and most polite ****-poor English, then proceeded to repeat verbatim the lengthy
manual procedure I had already printed out from the HP web site

1. These people do not know how to write printer installation software.
2. These people do not care enough about some customers to provide a program to
clean up after the poorly written printer installation software.

I guess this is what happens when you dominate the printer market as HP does. It
is a kind of Microsoft-itis arrogance, which once infected IBM badly. Now IBM
is a lesser light in the computer industry, striving hard to recover from its
arrogance... Ben Myers
