Hi guys, new here.
I have a Powerbook 140 and a couple of Classic and SE 4/40's and need
to clean off the HD's and reinstall, but have no OS discs. Great units
still, for writing (I write mostly) but the HD's are full and need
defragging. Why throw out solid products that still work otherwise.
Also like to find printer and CD-player cables for the 140. I do run
an eMac and an iBook G4 on the broadband so shunting it over the www
is ok as is burning CD's (hence the CD cable for the 140, it's a
special one). Problem, never pay over the www.

Another subject: The old keyboards were vastely superiour to the new
ones. Can one change the old connector to USB, so I can use my old
keyboards on my newer stuff?

System 7.5.3 and updates to 7.5.5 are free from Apple, and should work
perfectly on your PB140 as well as SE.

First, I use a 520c for writing, same as you. I got mine for $15, no
battery, but otherwise works great. To clear the HD's, push off
unwanted data to trash and empty. If you wish to keep it, send it to
floppy first. If you have no way to read a floppy on another machine,
connect to an old modem and connect that modem to the internal modem of
a newer machine, run Z-Term on the older machine and a dumb terminal app
on the newer, and do a modem to modem transfer (x-modem, z-modem). Then
delete the unwanted files. If you still need to defrag, find an old
copy of disk express on ebay or similar for $5 or less.

If you need to reinstall system 6 through 7.5, you can download them
from Apple for free and then put them on floppy to make system install
floppies.

I have an old laser printer, personal laser writer, doesn't talk to OS
X, but it works fine otherwise. Has a fairly young toner cart in it. I
can offer it to you for $15 plus shipping. If interested, e-mail me.

On the CD cable, I don't understand what you are looking for. Could you
better explain?

You should always post your GENERAL location when you ask for these
things. I would gladly give them to you, if you dropped by, but I
expect the trip would not be worth it.

If you repost with your location and don't hear anything in a few
days, look up Mac user groups on the Apple web site, or see if there is one
on Yahoo.

Get yourself an IMate. it is a ADB to USB converter. that
allows you to use all of your ADB goodies on your USB macs. I have one
myself and I can vouch that they work well. No special drivers needed
for keyboards or mice. Although there is software shims for items
that are not keyboards and mice. Just plug your keyboard into the
Imate and plug into your USB only macs. I bought mine on Ebay pretty
cheap. No OS changes needed.

They require you to have a working Macintosh with a
floppy drive to use them.

800k images require MacOS 9 (not Classic) or older and a built
in floppy drive.

400k images have the same requirments as 880k, but are NOT available
from Apple. There are some web sites with them if you look real hard.
Apple requested all of the sites they found to stop offering them.

AFAIK there are no bootable 7.5.5 images, you have to start with something
older and upgrade. Obscure verssions of 7.5, which supported some PPC systems
are no where to be found, nor are the system eanblers" to create them from the
downloadable images.

An example is the System Enabler 411, which is no where to be found. It
was discussed on one of these groups recently.
