The Mac equivalent of VISTA has been out for several years.

OK, it's not fully equivalent; OS X is not fundamentally broken and
unfixable. Microsoft insider bloggers are saying that VISTA is, just as
XP is.

Leopard might be out before Vista. At one point they were both
expected in late 2006 but now vista has slipped to 2007. Hey,
I have a good idea - why don't we just wait and see?

It's already here. You know it as OS 10.4
but OS XI isn't as cool as OS X so Apple is
not going to be changing the version number
any time soon.
