OT -- inexpensive HDTV

I know this doesn't have anything to do with Dell, other than they are
currently monitors for two Dimension 4550 to play recorded TV, games, etc.

I just bought my daughters each a 32" LCD HDTV. I looked everywhere and
didn't want to spend a ton of money. One important requirement was the
ability to use the full resolution (1360x768) as a monitor.

Believe it or not, I bought Vizio TVs at the Sams Club. Integrated NTSC
(SD)/ ATSC (Over the air HD) / QAM (unecrypted Cable HD) tuners. The QAM
tuner is rare in this price range. Tons of inputs (2 HDMI, 2 Component,
VGA, Composite).

These things are incredible. $699. Nothing else came close in price. HDTV
on them is stunning.

Just thought I'd recommend them, particularly if you want to ease your way
into HD. They work great as PC monitors too. Big screen, decent
resolution. My daughter plays Half Life on hers and it is stunning.

Tom
who owns way to many HDTVs. Two per household resident. Something wrong
with that.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have been wanting to get into HDTV
but didn't know where to start, and also didn't want to spend $2,000.

I've seen some models ("Olivia" or something like that) consistently
less expensive, but when I saw them in stores (Office Depot maybe) I
wasn't that impressed.

I am going to do some googling on the acronyms you used above (ATSC
sounds very interesting). Also, what newsgroup would you recommend
that relates to this?

Nothing wrong with that. (Journey, who has 4 flat screens hooked up
to one desktop, and loves it)

You guys make me think about the little sign my uncle had on his
Hatteras years ago that read " the difference between men and boys is
the price of their toys" (or very close to that if I misquoted). And
no, I don't want a Hatteras, too much work for too little fun (I know
because I did some of it). I could go on but I'd rather hear about
the electronic toys <g>.

I am thinking about a new TV for my living room tho mine isn't old.
Not exactly sure what I want so I'm in thinking mode for now. I may
buy several smaller hdtv's for around the house (not the living room)
this year or next year to replace the older ones. Any suggestions for
smaller ones in a bedroom (around 20 to 25")? Not sure if they will
be for PC's but I suppose having duo purpose isn't a bad idea.

AVSforum.com is likely your best bet. Most of the inexpensive brands are
similar, but most won't do Cable HD without a cable box.

Don't go that small for the bedroom. You won't be happy. With a
widescreen, the inches is misleading. Go for a 32", at least. I have a 46"
in my bedroom.

yea I have been looking at the same model but I just don't need a new set.
Just bought a standard about 2 years ago. If I go HD then I need to upgrade
my satellite. They have a beautiful picture and the price is right. I think
I am to cheap.
