(OT) Link to Lenovo ThinkPad T60 at buy.com....

I have no idea if this is a good deal or not, but I'd like to see some
comments from some users who know these machines (or similar ThinkPads):

Can't tell if it's new or a refurb. I know I wouldn't want buy.com holding
my warranty.

Hi!

I recently purchased a Lenovo N100 3000 series notebook at Office Depot. It
was purchased to replace a fallen Compaq machine with a broken off power
connector. It was priced at $999 with a $300 mail in rebate. The unit itself
came with 1GB of RAM and Windows Vista Home Premium.

If I were the end user (it belongs to my brother, but I do the computer
buying), I would replace Vista with XP Pro or Home. It does run well with
Vista, and everything works in the hardware and software department. I'm
just not crazy about Vista at all.

The IBM build quality doesn't seem to have gone out the window just yet.
(I'd know, too. Check the sig...that's just a slightly serious computer,
especially considering the thickness of the case metal and its weight. :-) )
The N100 feels sturdy and well made. It also still has the classic
"copyrighted code and parts contained within" notice printed on it, just
like most other IBM/Lenovo PCs from times past.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Lenovo...

Ben,

Does Lenovo service their own stuff (under their warranty but via
contractors like Dell)?

I notice only one year of warranty and it appears from the link that any
"extended warranty" seems completely third-party.

Perhaps I need to check the Lenovo site and see what they offer over there
warranty-wise.

I think Lenovo has gone 3rd party like everyone else. IBM's one-time (and
still?) world-class service organization has the large customer accounts as its
focus. No offense, but neither you nor I fall into the large customer account

No offense taken and poorly worded on my part.

I guess I should've asked if Lenovo support is the primary contact and a
conduit for (ultimately) any onsite support if required.

I'd really like to have one of these ThinkPads just to verify that they are
as good as most everyone suggests that they are.

The main thing I like about the ThinkPads is their excellent keyboard.
Otherwise they are overkill and too expensive for me. They are very
durable, and made to take a lot of abuse and still keep working.

That can be very important for the frequent business traveller or in
business situations where a non-functioning computer could make or
break a deal or have some other consequences.

The ThinkPad keyboards are a real pleasure to use, however I tried one
of the newer consumer models (the 3000?) and it wasn't as good as
others I had tried in the past.
