Is it just me or do notebooks just run very hot.
I bought a new Inspiron a while ago and the temperatures are
off the charts! If anybody gets the same problem could they
tell me... that way I'll know that I didn't get faulty
Hardware.
Thanx in advance

You didn't mention the model number - you can check the Dell/Intel
website for more information, including normal processor operating
temps.

A lot of laptops use either the Pentium IV desktop or mobile
processor. These processors tend to run hot, and laptops tend to be
not so good at dissipating heat. If you have a PIV based laptop, you
may want to invest $20 in a laptop cooling pad.

I checked the normal opperating temps and turns out that the laptop was
perfectly fine, but what scares me is that my old Compaq opperated at
20-30 degrees lower than this one... interesting

I have a Tosfibal satellite p25-s420 notebook. It has a P4 HT and it
runs very hot, I can do most tasks, run dreamweaver, and flash with
e-mail etc, however when I play a full screen game with a lot of
graphics. it likes to overheat. I have tried propping the back up with
a book, this helps but still it shuts off sometimes. Finally I resorted
to running a small table next to it when I am gaming and this works
great.
I didnt know they had cooling pads, that is cool I will check that out.

How do you tell what temp your processor is running at?

There are a number of programs (motherboard monitor, mobilemeter, etc)
that will monitor system temps under windows. I don't know if your
laptop's BIOS will allow you to check - a lot of desktop BIOS supports
that.

Yep, there's a big difference in heat output between Pentium IV
processors and Pentium M or Pentium II/III. My Pentium I IBM Thinkpad
560x doesn't even have/need a fan! and runs quite cooly.

My friend has a Macintosh with a motorola chip and his laptop is
usually running at 20-30 degrees less than mine. We always have
arguments on whether PC is better or Mac and he always uses this as
one of his arguments (besides the fact that Mac is suceptable to fewer
viruses). Well anyway I looked it up and on average The motorola chips
run @ temps much less than the Intels. Either way I still like PC
better... who's with me... Huh!
