I think I know the answer already.... but can my P4P800-E accept
one of the new dual-core CPUs?

Just got one of HP's at work and now my home box feels soooo
slow.... -)

Asus website will tell you that info. You may need to update the bios
though.

(I didn't find a listing for a plain P4P800-E; this one is the Deluxe.) The
P4P800 series uses the old Socket 478. As far as I know, the desktop dual
core CPUs (some of which are still called Pentiums) are all Socket 775.

In other words, no.

It also has AGP graphics and DDR memory (rather than DDR2 or DDR3). The most
cost-effective upgrade may be a new system.

Options are limited for S478. Pentium D is LGA775.
Core2 is LGA775. For S478, there is Pentium 4 up
to 3.4GHz. And then overclocking on top of that.
A Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, gives a real core
and a virtual core, for some of the smoothness of
a true dual core.

There is also the CT479 adapter, which allows Pentium-M
to be used with a limited set of S478 motherboards. But
I don't expect that is going to get you where you want to
go either.

I'm using at the moment -Socket 478 for
Intel Pentium 4/Celeron up to 3.2GHz+
-Intel Hyper-Threading Technology ready
-Supports Intel Prescott CPU

This mo/bo is Socket 478 and accepts only P4.
No dual-core CPU is supported.
