P4P800 sound problem

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe, flashed bios P4P81010.AMI
P4 2.6GHz
2X256M DDR 400
XP pro
Using on-board audio with Altec Lansing ATP3 2.1 speakers
(http://www.alteclansing.com/product_...pID=ATP3&sID=2)
connected to the lime connector. When the audio wizard came up after
reboot, there was no 2.1 system in the options. So, I chose stereo
speakers.
Is that a right choice?
Audio driver: SoundMax version 5.12.1.3630 from the Asus CD
No over-clocking

When I turn on the computer, the speakers make a sound (pop)!
And just before windows loading completes, it makes another hissing
sound. I have not noticed any other problems.
What is wrong? How can I fix this?
Can I load another driver (not from Analog Devices)?
I am not into listening to music over my computer.
I just want basic sound. I surf the web and send emails and play some
games.

Yes, only with a track actually recorded in 5.1 would the .1 be an actual
seperate channel, otherwise it's just used to pump out the bass.

Lower wave volume, mute bass bost, increase the volume on your speakers.

Had the same problem with my p4p800dlx. After trying to make it work
for 3 days I said tho hell with it and bought a Creative Blaster Live
5.1. At least it should be stable with all the kids games.

The frustrating thing is even I know what causes the popping, it's just a
lazy software implementation and it could be fixed EASILY.

Basically what happens is if the internal source mixing produces a waveform
that goes over the peak, it wraps around to the other end of the wave and
produces that popping sound. All that it would take to fix that is to limit
overflows, you'd obviously lose some sound detail but at least it wouldn't
pop. Obviously SB products are alreading doing this in hardware.

Thanks for pointing out that the volume may have an effect.
This is what I did:
1- Increased all the desktop volumes (Wave, SW Synth, CD Player, Line In and
PC Beep).
2- Lowered the volume on the Altec Lansing speakers.
That did the job. The pop sound is now negligible (gone) and I can live
with it.

The popping is from the onboard audio being too loud (clipped, except it
doesn't clip as it should), not the speakers.

You should have unused stuff like PC Beep and the like muted.
