P5W DH Delux Q-Fan

Hi

I have a computer built using the P5W DH Deluxe motherboard, which buy the
way I find is excellent and rock solid.

The one issue I have is with the Q-Fan control of the fans. All the
documentation indicates the fan's adjust themselves depending on load and
temperatures, only the don't regardless of the settings made in the BIOS.

Using Asus PC-Probe the Q-Fan has 3 settings, Silent, Optimal, and
Performance, however these just relate to very slow fan speeds, medium
speed, and fast fan speeds, these speeds do not very with temperature.

The silent setting is silent however as soon the system is under load for
any length of time the CPU/Case temperatures rise but the fan speeds do not.
The 'optimal' setting is fine as this keeps the system cool under load,
however I am now sat here in a fairly cool room, in winter in the UK, with
CPU and case temperature showing 20 degrees but the fans still spinning at
the medium setting where in no way they need to be.

I have turned Q-Fan off and have setup SpeedFan 4.31 to adjust the fan
speeds, and this works well, under little or no load fans are slow and
quiet, and as the system is put under load the fans speed up.

So the fans can be speed controlled, it just seems the Q-Fan setting in the
BIOS is nothing more than 3 fixed speeds, which is the opposite as all the
marketing and info given about the board.

Ideally the BIOS should be controlling the fan speeds which is safer than
running a program to do it, but it doesn't seem to, anyone else noticed this
or found a way to make it work?

Regards

Phil

You should report this to Asus Tech Support. If this is a shortcoming of
the BIOS, they need to fix it. Or, they may have some comical explanation
as to why it happens.

Most Asus motherboards have a Super I/O chip with integrated hardware monitor.
The hardware monitor includes temperature measurement channels, fan RPM channels,
and fan speed controllers. Some of the integrated hardware monitors are sophisticated
enough, that they can measure the temperature, and adjust the fan in response,
without software intervention. Usually the chip will also have some means to
adjust the speed manually (such as what Speedfan is probably using).

So I'd want to hear what Asus Tech Support thinks - it may be you'll have to
wait three months for this to be fixed in a BIOS update. The sooner you report
it, the sooner it gets fixed.

Hi, is the fan connector 3 pin or 4? The HSF that came with my core2 duo
varied it's speed according to the temp of the CPU, that was 4 pin. However
my Scythe Ninja, 3 pin, doesn't....

That is a good point.

Check the BIOS "CPU Q-Fan Mode". [PWM] is for a 4 pin fan.
[DC] is for a 3 pin fan. That should fix it.

Hi

Thanks for your replies.

The Core2Duo is using Intel's stock cooler with 4 pin connector. This is
connected to the 4 pin connector on the motherboard and PWM is set in the
BIOS, I have tried various combinations of Q-Fan settings in the BIOS and
those in PC Probe, but apart from setting the fan speeds to a fixed Slow,
medium, or fast speed, there is no automatic adjustment.

SpeedFan is working just fine with all the fans in the system, although this
only works when Q-Fan is disabled in the PC Probe application as when Q-Fan
is on this overrides the SpeedFan adjustments and makes the fans run at the
same fixed speed.

I'll raise it with Asus.

Regards

Phil

Hi, I think you should as my board seemed to work ok with q-fan, I could
watch the variation in speed with Asus Probe...

Why don;t you mention this in the Asus forum for this motherboard as well?
