Anyone point me to some BIOS password removal/finder software? I've got
a D400 (laptop) here that's locked me out.

I'm not sure how software could capture a bios password since the bios
runs after a reboot and prior to the OS. But if there is such
software I'm willing to stand corrected.

No problem. The standard quick fix is to call or chat online with Dell
Technical Support, prove ownership, and they'll get you back into BIOS.

What he said. Dell's really good about it. As you can understand, they
want proof of ownership to ensure they're not helping fix a stolen
laptop, but it is very simple.

There is no such software.

There is a way on every model to reset the password (sometimes more than
one way), but it's "secret". On some models, the "secret" has leaked,
on other models it's still secure. Don't know about your model. A
Google search is definitely in order. In many cases, large numbers of
laptops by the same mfgr use the same method.

Methods include:

"Dongles" for some port (USB port, printer port, etc.)
"Key Discs" (Floppy, bootable CD or USB key)
Shorting points on the motherboard

NOTE: REMOVING THE CMOS BATTERY WILL ***NOT*** CLEAR THE PASSWORD.

I'm glad to see we agree on the proper method for restoring access.

Hi!

> There is no such software.

Well, yeah...there is. The only trouble is that the system must boot up
without prompting you for a password so you can go on to run it. If it will
do that, you might stand a chance of killing the password, although laptops
are generally much more "hardened" in this regard than desktops.

I ran into that particular problem on a Toshiba desktop PC. Its AMI BIOS had
become convinced that there was a password requirement to get into setup. I
never had enabled one, so I tried the obvious by pulling the CMOS battery.
Didn't even faze it, not even after being left overnight with the battery
out and plug pulled. There wasn't a jumper on the motherboard to toggle
either. Even the old DEBUG script couldn't whack it.

I finally found some software that purported to do two things--reveal the
stored password in the CMOS RAM for an AMI BIOS and totally blow away the
CMOS RAM. It showed the password as complete garbage that couldn't possibly
be entered from the keyboard (at least not without a lot of thought and
ALT+NUMPAD entries), so I let it go on. That finally brought the system
around, and it never did that again.

I am absolutely not advocating or intending to support the theft or misuse
of a computer system. This information is provided only for the purpose of
helping those who rightfully own the computer that has locked them out.

Two points - that's not a software fix and Dell are most definitely not
helpful if you are the second owner.

There's a software to change the service tag. It clears the EEprom which
is also where the password is stored. However, it won't work if the
laptop is set to boot from the HD. And the boot order can't be changed
without access to the BIOS.

I find them very helpful if you're the second owner as long as the
purchase has included the original owner filling out the transfer web
page. Very quick and easy.
