My Pavillion a530n has 4 usb ports at the back, and one at the front.
The one at the front never did work, and I just never got around to bringing
it to the attention of the people that I bought it from.
I contacted HP, but nothing they suggested worked (updated the BIOS).
When I plug something in the port, there is the audible beep that a
connection was made, but nothing is recognized.
Please help, and thanks to all.

Did you try different devices? (just in case it's yoru device)
Did you try it after disconnecting the other USB devices? (just in
case there is a conflict with another USB device)

In last resort, let's resintall the USB controllers and hubs:
- Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device manager
- Go down in the list and expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
- Delete everything there
- Reboot and Windows should reinstall them automaticly
- Retry

It might work...

Yes, I've tried different devices...they all work in all the hubs (4) in the
back, but nothing is recocgnized in the front hub.
I've uninstalled all the usb controllers and hubs in the device manager, but
they all come back, and still the front one doesn't work.
Would you have any other ideas?
All I can think of now is to open the pc and see if there's a connection
missing right at the hub.

Well, I finally got to opening up the pc, gave it a good cleaning, but still
couldn't make out any missing connections.
The front USB jack is not recocgnized by any hardware plugged into it, even
though there's the distinctive sound of something getting plugged or
unplugged in the port.
Any ideas, anyone?
Thanks to all.
