Hello all, I bought a new 250GB Maxtor HD, after installing it into my
system as a primary slave (on IDE1) and turning the power on, the
drive makes some noises (kind of like clicking) and after a few
seconds the power is completely shut down. I have tried installing the
HD on a newer DELL machine and it worked perfectly, but when I try to
put it back in my older custom made machine it doesn't work at all.

I have a P4 on an Intel D850MD and I have updated the bios to the most
recent version, it runs under WinXP Pro, although it never gets that
far when the new HD is connected, is has a few boards (graphics,
sound, lan, etc), the main HD is a 80GB. I also have a DVD+RW drive
hooked up as secondary master (IDE2), a couple of USB devices and no
floppy.

I suspect the problem is somehow related with the power supply, I'm
not really sure what the wattage of PSU is, but if I connect the new
HD to the PSU, and only to the PSU – i.e. no IDE or anything – the
system still won't boot.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any replies,

saxo

It sounds like the motherboard's BIOS of your older computer CANNOT
recognize that large of a harddrive. Return it and get a 120 GB harddrive.
Your BIOS will probably only recognize up to a 137 GB harddrive.

If the power supply was too weak, you could tell by having the system
work when you unplugged other optical drives and harddrives, and only
had the new drive going. Any power supply should be able to handle
that. If it still doesn't work, you have other problems.

How about the jumpers? Sometimes we forget the little details. Also
make sure you don't mix optical/harddrives on the same IDE cable.
