When installing K-Byte 256mb. pc133 memory board to HP Presario 5000
computer, computer would not boot. Software is Windows ME. Original memory
board was a 64mb. pc100. After removing 256mb. stick and re-installing
original pc100 stick, computer booted up as usual. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Eugene,

Some older motherboards, such as some based on the Intel 440BX chipset, work
flawlessly with PC100 memory, but fail to respond to PC133. The chipset and
motherboard circuitry together do not respond affirmatively to PC133 DIMM
signals, because the board was designed before PC133 DIMMs were available.
Other, usually newer, boards, have no problem intermixing PC100 and PC133.

You probably need to find some good quality PC100 memory for your Presario, and
give/sell the PC133 to someone whose system can use it... Ben Myers

Eugene,

The reason for this one is the CL spec of the SDRAM module. HP/Compaq
and IBM normally use CL2 as oppose to the common CL3 which is probably
what you've got. Try going to www.crucial.com and look for your machine
model. Local/online shops normally sell CL3.

Good luck!

Before you give up on that stick, note that the Presario5k has a "memory
count" check on every boot. Reinstall that stick, make sure it's seated
properly, and then try to boot up. Instead of letting it boot to windows,
enter the BIOS setup screen (F10 or Del or Ctrl key, one of them will work).
See if it counted your memory correctly, this should be on a screen near the
beginning. If so, exit setup and try to reboot again. If not, then get a new
stick from Crucial.

If it did count correctly, try another reboot. Be sure to watch out for any
messages during the bootup screen. Is it giving you any errors, or what
exactly is it doing?

The reason I say this is that I've got two sticks of K-byte 256 and the
original 256 that came with it sitting right here inside my Compaq Presario
5000. So I feel the memory will work for you; the motherboard is new enough
to handle pc133. My guess is it has something to do with that memory count.
