Perhaps a microchip or PLD?

Hello,
I don't think I have the right terminology to describe what I'm
looking for, I'm more of a software guy really, but here goes: I have
in mind a project, just a little something to tinker with and what I'm
looking for is some compact 'motherboard', basically something that
comes with a processor, bios (either 'pre-programmed' with some
company's or one I have to program myself), some fixed amount of
memory, io slots for various existing peripherals... get the idea? Not
anything fast, like I said, just something to tinker around with. The
picture in my mind is something along the lines of a graphic
calculator, that I can plug my own power source into and io devices
('devices' might be an exaggerated word, how about a LCD and some
buttons) of my choice and that I can write to in asm (or C?) from a
computer. Does such a product exist for purchase in non-commercial
quantities (for customers such as myself) or am I just day dreaming?
