The nature of the fire looks exactly like the Lithium battery exploding.
This is what happens if they are overcharged or short circuited. It is also
what happens if they are charged after being overdischarged.

A study by Gartner Group found that about 22%
of all notebook PC will experience a hardware
failure in the first four years with 15% failing
in the first year. The most frequent problems
invlove the motherboard and hard drive. Gartner
notes that two years ago laptops failure rate
was higher (20 to 28 percent) and that notebook
reliablity is gradually improving.
