Play sound during startup?

Under Mac OS X is it possible to either (a) modify the startup chime, or
(b) play a wav/aiff during boot?

There seems to be an app called 'BootBeBop' but I'm a little leery about
installing it. It _seems_ to be 10.3 specific and I'd rather not end up
with a non-booting system simply for the sake of a startup noise.

You might try StartupSound.prefPane from versiontracker. But I dont
think techs would recomend quenching that chime via system. Maybe turn
the volume off before you shut it down, if you do
