Hi, my father just bought a Dual core AMD 4200 processor, and Asus
motherboard with it, a 300gb ultra16 hard drive, a 256mb vid card.

I have legitimate copies of Windows 2000, XP home, XP professional with
Service pack 2, XP 64bit

I used the hard drive software's partition manager to create a 20gb
partition, and the other the remained 280gb. I start the windows
installation (any do this) and it freezes, claiming various errors each
time. The problem is I know its the hard drive, I just don't know how
to solve it.

I was told Windows XP with service pack 2 is supposed to have Large
Disk support..I've tried many options, including trying to use the
hard-drives personal drivers (didnt seem to recognize), using different
file systems (FAT32, NTFS), and all different combinations on all 4
CDs.

Anyone know what the solution is?

Delete the partitions you setup already, and start from scratch
installing WinXP/SP2 and let WindowsXP setup and format your partitions
for you. You don't need to do anything else.

make is the hard drive (Maxtor ?) and is it a Sata2 drive ?

This info is important.

Oh, I must add that you only need XP-SP1 installation cd-rom to
install on HDD bigger than 137mb. I would not use third party utility
as the other posted mentioned...

You dont 'need' sp1, its just that the full size will not be used in the
initial setup

The motherboard is Asus MV2, the Hard drive is a Maxtor 300gb 16mb
cache ultra ATA.

Last night I tried just using the windows XP Professional Service pack
2 install CD, using it's option to formal the drive to full volume
with NTFS. Later in the setup it crashed.

Any ideas?

Have you run a program like Memtest 86+? It sounds like , with the
various symptoms you mentioned, that the memory might be a little
flaky. If that's the case, the HD doesn't stand much of a chance to
make it through a complete OS load.

Another thing you can do is run Maxtor's diagnostic utility. I believe
it's called PowerMax.
