I've found what seems to be an inexpensive p-supply w/good specs. The
brand is Powmax, with the following specs:
Output:
+5v / 30A max.
-12v / 0.8A max.
-5v / 0.3A max.
+12v / 25A max.
+3.3v / 28A max.
+5vsb / 2.0A max. It's listed as a 400-watt, model LP-8800-D, and can be
purchased as cheap as ~$12.00 including s/h. Has 1-year warranty.
Needing one for an ECS K7S5A, at 1st I was dubious, but when I read the
specs, including compliant with 2.03 & ATX 12v 1.1, I had 2nd thoughts.
Anyone with experience with it? Any ideas, pro/con will be appreciated.
Thx, sdlomi

I have a 300w Powmax PS that has worked nicely for 1.5 years now with
a 1.4g Tbird/k7s5a rig. I got mine pretty cheap ($28) from
www.compgeeks.com. BTW, my supply came in a box that stated it was
rated for "up to" 1.2g Tbird AMD CPUs.

If it can actually deliver on the advertized ratings, it looks like a
fine K7S5A power supply. I have used good 250 watt PS on this board and
it has worked great. I know that it needs a higher 5v rail than the
average motherboard. I know there was powmax power supplies that have no
overcurrent protection, so it would not be advisable to over extend them

Is the Powmax supply I have. I note it claims to have both short
circuit and overvoltage protection, and 2 cooling fans. If I could
get another for $20 it would be worth the price.

Asound/Powmax/Leadman is a real bottom dollar outfit, can't say they
are great quality. I have an Asound sound card that was $8 and it
worked just fine. I have a 650VA UPS that is a Powmax and it failed
miserably last Friday during a thunderstorm (failed to provide backup
power in time to prevent system restarts during brownouts). Gonna
dump that dude real soon. When it comes to UPS units, don't buy
cheap, as some aren't fast enough in detecting poor power input
conditions.

I just bought the 400W 8800D (single fan) for $15 bucks. It states on the
box ' Protection circuits for inrush current, over current and over
temperature.

Can't say anything about the unit as I've not used it yet... and besides...
it will be replacing the one on my DFI K6BV3+ with a K62+450 @ 550 that my
son uses as opposed to this K7S5A. Not positive that the problems he has
started encountering from time to time are PS related (I suspect they are)
but I figured that for 15 beans it's worth a shot.

The Powax website says this is an 'AMD Recommended' supply with a link to
the AMD list... but neither Powmax nor ASound are on it ?!?!?!?!?

I'd be interested in hearing others' results with this PS as well.

All companies make those claims, true or not, and here's an example of
not: http://www.silentpcreview.com/module...rtid=43&page=2

The supply tested, a Vantec 420W, actually was built with circuitry
meant to provide over-current protection, but it just didn't work well
enough, a common defect in many brands.

As far as over-temperature protection goes, it's rare, even among the
best quality supplies.

AMD does list the parent company, Leadman, whose brands include
Asound, Powmax, Robanton, and Raidmax, and Leadman and Powmax brand
supplies are identical.

Powmax may not be worth $12-14 when 300-350W Fortron (Sparkle)
supplies are available for $30-40 and in reality put out higher power
than a 400W Powmax.

I"ve got a PowMax 400 Watt -- it's the LP-6100d though. It's got the double
fans (one intake, one exhaust). It's held-up for about a year now. The voltages
seem to remain stable and in-spec -- at least according to VIA's Hardware
Monitor.

My 300W Powmax failed after about two years when a low voltage
capacitor went bad, but changing that capacitor. Earlier, I had an A1
PSU develop a shorted 1 uF capacitor, and I think in both cases the
brand was JGE, which I think was involved in that counterfeit
electrolyte scandal.
