I am trying to install a Third drive on my dimension 8400. I have a thrid
SATA 200mb drive. I have connected
the drive using the provided cable to connector #2 (3rd out of 4) and legacy
power (as the 8400 has only two SATA power connectors used by my other drives)
When I boot, I get a message that Drive 4 (?) cannot be found. Can anyone
help me figure out how to troubleshoot this?

Sounds like it is turned on in the BIOS. Turn it off.

Jacob, Did you turn the SATA connector ON in the BIOS? When I added my 2nd
SATA drive to my Dimension 9150, I had turned ON the wrong SATA connector in
the BIOS. A quick reboot to disable the wrong one and turn ON the correct
one worked fine. I also had to buy a Y adapter to get a SATA power
connector when I added a 3rd SATA drive from the Dimension 9150 power
supply. Only two SATA power connectors. I don't know exactly what you mean
by "legacy power". Did you go into Disk Management under Computer
Management and Initialize, Format and assign a drive letter ID? Right click
My Computer, Manage and Disk Management.

Try those suggestions and post back, good or bad news. Three SATA drives
should work. I'm thinking about adding a 4th SATA 320GB.

HTH, Pat

Pat, WHen it happened the first time, I went into the bios setup and noticed
that disk 2 and 3 were OFF. I turned them ON. This did not make any
difference.

My thrid drive comes with a "Legacy Power" socket. I assumed that it means I
can use the "old-style" power connector (which for instance powers to the DVD)
Perhaps that's the problem and the disk does not get any power. Getting a Y
adapter to for SATA power is porbably my next step, though I would have
assumed the legacy power would do the trick.

Thank you.

Jacob, I would think if the drive has the legacy power connector, it should
work. Do you have another computer to test the drive in? Did it work in
another computer or this one before? Maybe just a bad drive, it happens. I
had a WD 320GB that was DOA from newegg. Pat
