Has anyone else had problems with their CD drives etc. not refreshing
when a disc is removed / replaced ?

Its only happened over the last week since I did some Windows updates...

No problems here, which means nothing since configurations are completely
different.

Have you tried a system restore to back the updates/patches out and see if
things return to normal?

Not yet - i'm not 100% on just how well they blitz the system so i'm
reluctant to use it (i.e. I update files on a regular basis and don't
want to lose anything)

One of the updates failed on first installation (the update process just
hung) and I had to kill it off... thing is, the machines in work have
also started the same behaviour, and the updates for them are all
handled centrally.

This last batch was some 10 patches correcting 24 security bugs - I believe
that's what I read last week.

Don't know if this will help or not, but here you go:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-oct.mspx

Thanks for the link, but I didn't spot any obvious causes for the
changed behaviour...

BTW, Colin, Windows system restore will not alter or lose created/modified
files and data. It will back out application installs, driver installs, AV
updates, as well as the patches we're discussing.

start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore.

While it's not a guaranteed fix, it's very easy and won't hurt a thing even
if it does not fix the problem (which it might).

Oh yeah that baby is well worth the price of admission. Wish it was
there as far back as the Windows 3.1 days.

FWIW I did a system restore from last Monday and things are back to how
they should be - even after doing the updates :-)
