Hi there

Could anyone tell me the difference between these processors.(in laptops)

Intel Pentium 4 650 processor running at 3.4ghz
and a
Intel Pentium M 780 running at 2.26ghz

Whats the actual difference in speed/power.
Battery life.

Thanks in advance

Jamie

The Pentium 4 is a desktop CPU.

The Pentium M is both faster and uses less power.

The numbers (650/780) are relative performance ratings.

But there is a Mobile Pentium 4 and a Pentium 4 M and they are not the
same. The second one is part of Centrino chip set and uses less power.

Another thing also the pentium 4 generates so much heat and the pentium
M does not.
Hp Pavillion series had some of their high end desktop replacements
system using that Pentium 4 chip and to me its uncomfortable to use
after half and hour.
Meanwhile the units equipped with the Pentium M 780 runs really cool
its comfortable to use your unit for several hours.

OK, AFIK there is no Pentium 4 M; it is a Pentium M (or Centrino if it
has the Centrino package) and the specs you quoted refer to that chip.
The Mobile Pentium 4 is a lower-voltage version of the Pentium 4 desktop
chip.

Barry is entirely correct.

Thanks for the advice

But if you were to benchmark these two processors
which one would be faster..

The one with the higher clock speed is faster...i.e 3.4 ghz,

No, it is not necessarily faster. Benchmarks on the Pentium M show
equivalence at about 2x the processor speed for P4 chips.

Yep. On my new Core Duo Dell laptop, doing a single-thread
CPU-intense task (RAW image conversion), I compared my 1.8GHZ Core Duo
against a 2.66GHZ Pentium 4 Desktop. Core Duo was about 30% faster,
equivalent in this one (crude) benchmark to about a 3.5GHZ Pentium 4.

Were you able to see the comparison between the Pentium M 780 rated
at 2.26 ghz with P4 rated at 3.4 ghz?
or you were just generalizing the difference between the generic
types of pentium M chip with P4 chip...

It should be
Simple arithmetic shows ...a dual core processor had two processors in
one chip so 1.8 x 2= 3.6 ghz, should be faster than 2.66ghz pentium 4
and somewhat similar to 3.5 ghz pentium 4
