how to program laptop's ir port

Hi,
I have a compaq Presario 2500 laptop. I am planning to do something
with the ir port of the laptop (mainly to be able to use a remote
control to send signals to laptop). I think I have to program the ir
port for that but I am not able to find some kind of starting point on
how to proceed. Can any one help me with this.
