We have a Proliant DL380 (G2 I think) which has 3 18Gb disks in a RAID
5 array. We want to add an additional single disk for storing large
temporary files, so don't want it to be added to the existing array. My
questions are:

Can we simply plug in the new disk without powering down the server?
If we add the disk (either with power on or off) will it be
automatically added to the array, or can we configure it as a simple,
stand-alone drive?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Doug

In the absence of any advice I went ahead anyway! It seemed to work OK.
The procedure was:

Insert the new disk - server still running.
Run the Compaq Array Configuration Utility - Configuration Wizard.
This created a second array, RAID 0, consisting of just the new disk.
Run Windows Disk Management. This detected the new disk and ran a
wizard to partition and format.

So, very easy in the end. The server didn't need powering down and the
disk was added in about five minutes.
