Question about RAID and multiple computers

I'm working on a project involving multiple old computers. By today's
standards they're obsolete but still have some nice specs if compared
to my old 486 and, *shudder* my Commodore64 sitting in the corner. So
I was wondering if it was possible to set up a RAID array, not using
multiple disks within one machine, but instead using each pc in the
RAID array. I was thinking some sort of array management software or
software RAID app could help but I'm not sure. Even if it isn't
possible, I'd appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Sorry, but what you are planning is not possible. You are apparently not
very aware of RAID design and theory.

I think I read an article on this some time ago - if I understand what
you're trying to accomplish, do a search for "distributed computing"
(I think).

Something like using multiple computers to resolve a single task, no?
There is software available for this, but it is enterprise-grade (I
think $10,000 US range). It is used in computer animation tasks
(scavenging idle processor cycles and resources) and things like the
SETI project.
