A major concern about upgrading an old computer systems
is whether the original power supply still will provide adequate
current to the three power rails (+3.3 volts, +5 volts, and +12 volts)
after all of your upgrades (second hard drive, optical drive, etc.)
are considered.
More information about power requirements is available at
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
According to that site
a basic AGP/PCI video card requires up to 30 watts,
ATI Radeon 9000/9100 requires up to 35 watts,
ATI Radeon 9500 requires up to 45 watts,
and ATI Radeon 9700/9800 Pro requires up to 54 watts.
My 6-years-old computer crashed upon booting after I upgraded to a
GeForce FX 5200 video card. My computer's original 200-watts power
supply already was maxed out after I had added a second hard drive and
added a CD-R burner, and the computer promptly crashed when I upgraded
to a GeForce FX 5200 card (which requires up to 75 watts). When I
upgraded to a 480-watts power supply, no more problems.
