The laptop will operate without the battery installed. If it works with the
ac adapter only then the battery is probably bad, although there is a way to
test it to be sure. This is from the Acer web site:
Product: Notebook
Issue: Power Issues or Will not Boot
Solution: If the notebook does not power on:
Make sure the ac adapter is correctly plugged into the notebook and into the
power cord.
If everything is plugged in correctly and it still will not power on, follow
these steps to complete a "power reset" of the notebook.
1. Unplug the ac adapter. Keep ac adapter unplugged.
2. Remove the battery and keep the battery unplugged.
3. Hold the power button down for 15-20 seconds. (Nothing will appear on
the display and none of the lights will light up.)
4. Release the power button and plug in the ac adapter ONLY. (Please note
that a power indicator light should be lit on the ac adapter when it is
plugged in, if it has one)
5. Normally power on the notebook.
6. If the unit does not power on, remove the ac adapter and insert the
battery into the system.
7. Plug the ac adapter back into the system, the battery charging light
will light up. If the battery charging indicator does not light up, the ac
adapter may not be providing proper power to the unit, and may need to be
replaced.

news:...
I recently purchased a 1703sc second hand. It has worked for a few weeks
with no major problems but now wont turn on. I have tried searching but cant
find anything relevant.
I have opened it up and if I remove and replace the battery I get some led's
to light up on the motherboard. If I press the power button without the
external supply it flashes several times orange, with the external supply it
flashes several times green. After pressing the button several times the
led's on the motherboard turn off and I get no life pressing the power until
I remove and replace the battery..
I am trying to identify if this is the motherboard or the battery. I cant
test the battery and a new one costs more then I paid for the laptop.
Will the lap top run without the battery in. Mine wont but there is power to
the battery terminals from the external power supply. Is the battery
required to complete the circuit?
Anyone seen anything similar?
Ian
