Is it a "GDI" printer? That is the old Windows graphics API (cf
Quickdraw on Mac OS 9) and if so I believe there's no way to make it
work with OS X.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear when I wrote "old". Most versions of
Windows use GDI, except Vista (and 2008?) use something newer called
WPF.

Even brand new printers can be GDI ones, sadly.

and look it up.

If it will work with CUPS, it can be made to work with MacOS.
