I really thought this should be in the right newsgroup, so copying to
<alt.sys.pc-clone.dell>. ;-)

The zeroth question is "Is this system worth anything, or should I
scrap it for parts?"

You could try dragging it outside, and blowing the dust out of it with
an air hose. Tobacco smoke is really had to get out, though, my
wife's CPAP (apnea, breathing) machine smelled of smoke for weeks
after a weekend in a smoker's house.

The machine is definitely worth saving for someone using it for general
browsing, e-mail, and light to moderate office applications. I've got one
loaned out at the moment that has the PIII 500mhz/512mb ECC RAM/and a 64mb
video card as well as a burner - running WinXP Home.

It's rock solid.

You'll never get the smoke residue completely out of the machine, but you
could try scenting it temporarily with either a dryer sheet that you can
tolerate or either a solid, non-flammable room deodorizer. Be warned that
any scent you choose might quickly fill the room.

The cost of the WinXP Home OS upgrade exceeds the value of the
machine, IMHO. Dunno how much memory the OP has in his machine, but
256M seems to be a minimum for reasonable performance...

I would open up the chassis and wipe down all the plastic, inside and out, and
the internal fans with isopropyl alcohol lightly moistening a lint-free cloth.

There are also commercial preparations used to clean electronic parts like
circuit boards. They are also usually the type that one wipes on and wipes off.

If he's for real, the first thing to do would be washing or replacing
any foam/fabric fan filters.

I get to clean machines like this A LOT. When I worked for an outfit
that supplied the Keno equipment to bars.
What I used to do was to pull all the cards, pull the MB and PS out.
Thenstrip the case down. Wiped down
the case and internals with alchohol on a towel. Then I used to pull the
CMOS battery and used a paint brush
and some more alchohol to brush down the board. Let it dry real good.
Pull the covers off the power supply and
blow it out good also. OR if you plan on using the machine buy a
replacement PS instead.
