as another post suggest, check the BIOS.
I have recently discovered the usefulness of a BIOS option
in (somewhat old, yet recent enough for me) AMI / Award Modular Bioses :
"PnP OS" : disable it and ol'good MSDOS will be happy.
well, i wish anyway i had a quad core CPU...
