If I'm not mistaken, a combo drive will use a different laser for DVDs and
CDs. I have a machine at home where it will not read DVDs, but is fine with
CDs. I would assume therefore that the DVD laser has stopped working. Time
for a new drive probably, unless you're luckier than I am and a DVD lens
cleaner solves your problem.
