The first thing to check is see if there is a non-bootable CD, floppy,
or USB device plugged in. As that will give you the same error message.
If that isn't it, I would get a Windows 95, 98, or ME Startup disk. And
once DOS is booted from a floppy, run...
FDISK /MBR
That will repair the main boot record on the hard drive and that might
be all it needs. Some Windows 9x and ME install CDs can also be used as
startup disks too. So you can do the very same thing. If you can boot
from a floppy or a CD, don't worry about the lithium battery yet.
If you get this far, either the MBR or the boot files are bad for some
reason. A reinstall will fix that problem. The only other things left if
that doesn't work are the hard drive, ribbon cable, power cable, or the
disk controller is bad.
