I bash vendors when they deserve it. HP deserved it, which is why they have
finally taken some steps to improve the tech support part of the web site. Do
you have any idea how many people have complained for how many years about the
lack of software drivers on the HP web site? When HP absorbed Compaq, it was
very ironic that the availaibility of drivers for the old Compaq boxes far
outshone the meager stuff that HP had for its own boxes.
As far as Vista-only support for the m8120n, this is consistent with HP's long
time policy of only supporting the operating system with which the hardware was
shipped. (Side comments: This also places owners at some risk if they want to
upgrade operating systems at a later date. HP's track record with scanners and
consumer-oriented printers is even worse in this regard, because suddenly
support for a device is no longer there in the next release of the OS, turning a
sometimes expensive device into a useless hunk of plastic and metal. And don't
get me started on Microsoft's role in this whole hardware obsolesence business.)
So the m8120n ships only with Vista, not with XP.
I make no apologies for taking a pro-consumer point of view rather than being an
out-and-out apologist for any hardware vendor . Consumers get screwed enough
these days by computer manufacturers and big box stores, making it more
difficult for some of us to make an honest and ethical living at the biz... Ben
