The only way to get one now is to buy an iMac; they're not available by
themselves yet. It might be another week or so before anyone can get one
without buying an iMac. The Mac Pro still comes with the Apple Mouse (nee:
Mighty Mouse).

I test drove one at an Apple Store yesterday; the only thing that I don't
like about it is that it doesn't have a third button (AKA scroll wheel or
ball button).

I was assuming that we would eventually start seeing third party apps
that allow for as many "buttons" as you want, new gestures etc.
However, I am now thinking that a lot of the stuff might be hard wired
in the mouse itself. We shall see.

You can also click the "ball button". I might have clicked it sometime
in the dim and distant past but I don't remember. I just tried it now
and it invoked Dashboard (on 10.5.8). Looking at Preferences -> Keyboard
& Mouse I see it can be configured to do other things if you want.

Different thing; the ball or wheel can act as a third button by pressing on
it. That's what is missing from the Magic Mouse.

Hopefully, the mighty mouse I bought a couple weeks ago will last until
the new mouse becomes available.

But I have a question:

So far, I have used wired keyboard and mice.

My need to be placed pretty close to the MacPro to get half decent file
transfer rates. The macPro has thick aluminium casing, which I suspect
shields/restricts RF signals, and I have a thick desk.

If I go to wireless mouse, will it work better than my handset ? Or
would I be stuck with not so great performance ?

What do you use the side buttons for?

So, although your wired Might Mouse has 4 buttons and you use (at least) 3,
and it doesn't suffer from a (loosely speaking) "wireless lag," you've
ordered a premium-priced Magic Mouse which is wireless and has only 2
buttons. I guess the Magic's "gestures" feature is extremely attractive to
you.

I don't; I have them turned off.

When I had a Microsoft Explorer Mouse, I used its side buttons for forward
and backwards, and missed that in the Apple Mouse. But the Magic Mouse can
do that with two-fingered swipes.
