Yep, that's about par for the course. Especially with apps like
Photoshop, which allocate and use memory voraciously.

I have a quad-core MacPro system which I use for Photoshop, Illustrator,
GoLive, Flash, Director, and other memory-hungry apps. I often leave it,
and the apps, running for days at a time.
I noticed precisely the same thing you describe. Increasing the RAM in
that computer from 1GB to 5GB fixed the problem.
