check
http://www.memtest86.com for a bootable memory diagnostic
software (free) It comes included with some Linux distributions and has
helped me find the source of my memory problems once. It can pinpoint
the problem area of memory. I would advise downloading it and burning
it onto a CD (they have ISO images) so you can use it in the future.
as far as keepint the flawed module, I wouldn't advise it. I had a 512
that died and I was unable to load Windoze cuz of it. Linux loaded just
fine though (a few problems with some Java games while running, though)
your problem is, as you said, in the memory. But if you have more than
one stick in a system, thats where you're gonna need memtest86
As far as feeling a difference between 256 and 256 (266) + 256 (400).
the memory will not increase in speed, but the fact that there is more
memory might make some memory-intensive operations (ie games) go faster.
