My understanding was that the SMTP server is not a big deal, unless you
actually want to use it to send email -- which is not my intent. Besides, as
I mentioned, I do have bunches of NG messages in my MacSoup database
already, which tells me that the settings did indeed work when I first
implemented them.
So...I guess I'm stuck.

Appearances can be (and in this case, actually _are_) deceiving: My NNTP
username is actually not long at all -- I simply x'd out much of the NNTP
Username field.
