I'm just guessing (what with not knowing the OP's intentions and
desires) that SUBSTing or ASSIGNing the drive letter helps to keep the
folder within short reach of something like the "My Computer" window.
Offhand I can't think of a better way to do that, but I've never had a
great desire to do so either. If I put a shortcut to a folder in the
Startup area of the Start Menu, I know the first thing I'd do is close
the folder, even though I didn't want to. Then I'd have to go through
the hierarchy (whether to a nearby shortcut or the actual folder
itself) to get it back.
