Tom,
gparted does it non-destructively. For example,
see the "Features" page in the link sent by Ben.
I used it, too. (Clearly, you *will* back up your
stuff previous to any such gamble.)
You can get a CD (simply download ISO) that
boots into a Linux, and from it you can run tools,
chiefly gparted. You don't have to work with the
Linux, just click and gparted starts and you do
your thing. I forget the name for this distribution,
if you want to go with it please let me know and
I will look it up. (This is how I sorted some issues
with a new system with Vista, including some of
repartitioning -- preserving data).
