The cooler you can keep anything, the longer it is going to last.
However, most laptops don't provide either a fan or air pathway to
help cool the hard drive.
A 5400 RPM Fujitsu drive in my Latitude D800 usually stays between
115-132 degrees depending upon what it is doing. It is cooler at idle.
I see similar temperature measurements from my other laptop drives and
this one has been running fine since March 2005 without incident. The
SMART data on this drive is also good.
Virtual PC will work a hard disk fairly hard.
Seagate does a very good job of keeping specifications online for
their drives, even if you have a very old one. On their support site
is a field you can put the model number into, and it will take you to
a page about the drive with information. Speaking of, here's more than
