I read something the other day that said there's something like a 30%
failure rate for the 1TB drives...

Seagate is not the only drive manufacturer pushing the envelope, using
less proven technologies to increase speed and storage capacity, while
lowering the price at the same time. To this I say, "Give me SCSI or
give me death." Apologies to Patrick Henry.

Still, it is disappointing to see this sort of blemish on a fairly good
Seagate track record. Maybe too many ex-Maxtor engineers were part of
the effort to bring 500+GB to market. Or could it be Seagate's highly
eroded stock price and less capital to invest in new developments?

I'm not seeing this, but I don't have any Seagate drives over 320GB. Scales
may have some >750GB though.

Right. And you'd remember if one failed and what brand it was.

The Register is reporting that Seagate believes the problem to be caused
by a "firmware issue."

"After reports that its 1TB Barracuda drives are failing at an unusually
high rate, Seagate says it has isolated a 'potential firmware issue'
that would seem to be the cause of this worldwide plague.

"The company will provide a free firmware upgrade for those affected by
the problem, and if you've lost data thanks to this firmware issue, it
will provide free data recover services as well."
