if the computer is not recognizing the internal CD writer as even a simple
CD-ROM drive, it is very likely that the CD writer has failed.
The other unlikely possibilities include a ribbon drive cable which is not
completely attached at one end or the other, and, as always, software, software,
software.
Open up the chassis and examine the drive cable for damage and for proper
connections.
To check out the latter possibility, go to
www.bootdisk.com and download the
Windows 98 boot disk image. Build a bootable Windows 98 floppy from the image,
boot your system from floppy and see if the CD writer can at least read CDs in
DOS mode.
If the drive is dead, it can be replaced with any good quality IDE/ATAPI CD
