WD's Diagnostics are about as good as you can get for WD drives. All the other
manufacturer's except Toshiba have their own diagnostics which are free
downloads. (I do not recommend Toshiba notebook drives for this reason, among
others.) Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test, originally IBM's, will work on any brand
of drive, although it limits some of what can be done if the drive is neither
Hitachi nor IBM.
There are also free programs that will report whether or not bad sectors have
been replaced by spares, an important criterion of drive health. I do not have
info about these programs immediately at my disposal... Ben Myers
