Nearly all DVD films are 5.1

Thanks good points. Straight to DVD/VHS movies may or may not have 5.1 and
you only get Digital when you use the digital audio cable anyway. Yep my
bad, I mistook CM-Audio's 5.1 Xearphone for true 5.1, no digital audio cable
connector on the K7S5A but I do have one on the Intel 810E.
Ok to WinDVD but other than DVDs no 5.1 titles right? No 5.1 streaming
audio? So if this is true why bother with a 5.1 sound card?

Even without the rear speaker the sound effects are sharper than 5.1.
Since like you I only have LOTR using DTS Digital ES and not many 6.1 or
Lucas THX titles I won't waste money on a rear speaker but those 100w+
subwoofers keep calling to me from eBay and electronics stores.

When you mentioned EAX I browsed the Creative Audigy site and they listed
Tomb Raider, Hitman 2 about 4 more EAX titles. Good idea using your PC as
your entertainment center.

I originally posted because I wanted to record audio CDs in 5.1 sound but
realized I didn't have software to do that and couldn't find (cheap)
software that did or music CD titles (that I like) in 5.1 format.

In order to really do that and get a "true" 5.1 it would have to be recorded
that way in the studio, and/or mixed for 5.1 from the original masters.
Where individual tracks could be mixed to the individual channels
independantly for proper sound stage representation.

That is, by the way, how they do 5.1 for movies ... everything is recorded,
then divided into separate audio tracks and mixed into the discreet
channels. You most certainly won't find any software on the cheap that will
come even close to this, and even if you had this software it takes hours of
tweaking to get everything just right ... mixing 5.1 really is an art in and
of itself.
