I think I found the perfect solution, just leave the turtlebeach installed
for the gameport, but enable the nf7-s nforce2 sound device also, and use
the nforce2 for sound output.

All that's needed is to choose the nforce2 as the output device in control
panel.

Doing this gave a *dramatic* speedup in GPL! I went from 30fps at the back
of a full-field start with the santacruz (detail sliders all maxed,
1280x1024) to 33fps with nforce2. That is a remarkable improvement from
simply switching soundcards. I haven't ran 3dmark to check sound fps there,
but I imagine they are similarly faster.

The nforce2 sound quality is the same or better in GPL. I also tried the
old game Outlaws, and it appears my beloved Sensaura is not supported by
nforce2. So its doubly good that I now have the option of switching between
the two soundcards.

That solution also means that programmable devices are suported, and if the
Nforce2 mic input is crap you have alternative!
