I opened the case and can see no fan attached to the video card. I
describe the noise as fan-like, but I don't think its the main fan.
Another comparison would be with the soft whirr of a fridge. Maybe
it's normal but I know that after its been running for a while, my
computer is definitely louder than other computers I occasionaly use.
I just stuck a pencil in the fan and stopped it for a second. The
noise was still there. You are informing me that the hard drive or
the cd loading can make a sound. That may be it, but the sound is
present all the time, not only when the photo editing software loads
initially. Possible clue as to the source of that sound: I notice
that when I use the rubber stamp feature on the soft ware the pitch of
that noise changes slightly, as if the machine was straining.
The only reason I am putting up my "problem" for discussion is that
the extended warranty (for which I paid an extra $200!) on my machine
is expiring soon, and if that sound is indicative of something that is
about to break down, like the video card, I want to know now if
possible. If it's not indicative of a malfunction, I can live with it
although it does get on my nerves sometimes.
