I have an inspiron 1525 notebook with Vista and just recently took the time
to research an audio recording problem that might be similar to yours.
There was no stereo mixer setting for recording, only the microphone. I
looked in Google and the Dell website and a fix/hack/work-around was listed.
Basically you get new drivers and set them to install using XP compatibility
mode. Here's the link. The drivers are for the Sigmatel High Def Audio
Codec, so if you don't have Sigmatel hardware this link probably is not for
you.

Then after you install, you can right click the speaker icon and click
recording devices. Click Stereo Mix, then properties. Check to be sure it
says device is enabled. If not, click that. Then I clicked set as default
and now I can record what ever sound the computer is making. It sure beats
having to use patch cables.
