Real Player is always wanting to check for updates; can I tell it not
to?

(I have these lovely shell scripts to play various things and rather
than running at the appointed time, they leave real player asking for
an internet connection and awaiting some response from me. The machine
is rarely on the internet in any case, just the second tuesday of the
month.)

Personally I wont even install RP on my computer.
I have zero use for it or its calling home tactics.

I encode audio with real encoder, because it produces adequate talk
quality with very small files (4mb/hr) and music a little bigger
(6mb/hr)

That leaves me needing real player.

It's a good product except for the options you have to find and
turn off these days, and deinstallations of parts that they supply
that you don't want.
