How to recovery M3291 from bad firmware flash?

I installed a brand-new M3291 SMDC in a S2882D (K8SD) system. Something
went wrong while the firmware flash routine was exiting leaving the
M3291 in a non-working state.

Reseting the M3291 seems to have no effect. The motherboard doesn't
respond to keyboard presses when the M3291 is connected.

I can get the keyboard working by putting a jumper on the BOOT Mode
(JP1) jumper but when I try to flash the M3291 again the UH8.EXE utility
cannot see it.

Anyone know how to recovery from a bad firmware flash?

Frank

A continuation to my last posting regarding my M3291 SMDC card problem.

I loaded Suse 10.1 linux on to my S2882D system and get this when I try
to flash the firmware on my M3291:

m3291b:/home/frank/Desktop # ./uh8l -u SMDC2882D.rar
BMC Utility on Linux For M3291 version 0.9.1
Copyright 2003-2006 TYAN Computer Corp.
IPMI Ver: 1.5 Firmware Rev: 0.17 Vendor ID: 8552 Pdt ID: 0
Update Firmware with File SMDC2882D.rar
Enter Downloader......OK
Flashing now
.................................................. .............................................OK
reset and wait
Exit Downloader......Firmware cannot return normal state
m3291b:/home/frank/Desktop #

I've tried this a couple of times and always get the same results.

I've tried downloading the firmware file (SMDC2882D.rar) again and also
get the same results.

I tried some other uh8l commands:

m3291b:/home/frank/Desktop # ./uh8l -d
BMC Utility on Linux For M3291 version 0.9.1
Copyright 2003-2006 TYAN Computer Corp.
IPMI Ver: 1.5 Firmware Rev: 0.17 Vendor ID: 8552 Pdt ID: 0
Get IP Address Fail
m3291b:/home/frank/Desktop # ./uh8l -a
BMC Utility on Linux For M3291 version 0.9.1
Copyright 2003-2006 TYAN Computer Corp.
IPMI Ver: 1.5 Firmware Rev: 0.17 Vendor ID: 8552 Pdt ID: 0
Get IP Address Fail
m3291b:/home/frank/Desktop #

I can't tell if I've scrambled mt M3291 or if the SMDC2882D.rar file may
be corrupt. The M3291 is suuposed to be a IPMI version 2.0 device but
it's reporting version 1.5.

Frank

I know zero about what you're trying to do, but I do notice one thing.

It is unlikely that a flashing utility would accept a .rar file directly.
RAR files are a form of compression and archiving. Like ZIP or tar.gz,
they typically aren't used directly. You have to undo them first.
I used a copy of unrar.exe (Windows) to list the contents of

ftp://ftp.tyan.com/software/tso/m329.../SMDC2882D.rar

07/27/2006 06:12p 6,836 2882r01.SDR
10/18/2006 12:46p 385,272 2882r20.bin
06/19/2007 04:34p 76 ASF5704.BAT
03/08/2006 05:48p 131,072 B341A244.BIN
12/18/2006 03:50p 323,447 b57udiag.exe
11/27/2006 02:27p 19 cfg.bat
10/18/2006 01:23p 64 dosfls.bat
05/27/2005 10:36a 40,608 IH8.EXE
11/27/2006 02:28p 178 linuxcfg
10/18/2006 01:23p 73 linuxfls
07/16/2007 03:55p 3,201 m3291.cfg
07/18/2007 09:04a 913 readme.txt
01/28/2008 08:57a 1,887,264 SMDC2882D.rar
09/24/2007 09:32a 1,320,133 smdc_S2882-D.jpg
11/09/2007 05:40p 112,339 UH8D.EXE
11/09/2007 05:43p 65,633 uh8l

08/05/2006 11:34a 200,704 UnRAR.exe
01/28/2008 08:57a 1,887,264 SMDC2882D.rar

Have a nose around some of the smaller files, like the .cfg ones.

There are a couple .bin files inside the archive. They are more likely
to be part of a flashing exercise. I just cannot imagine a flashing
utility getting a copy of Eugene's library. Flash utilities are
usually pretty simple minded (i.e. don't even do simple checks
to determine the thing they are flashing, is not a flash file).

Sorry for the intrusion,
Paul

Hello Frank,

you can always make an autoexec.bat with the command 'dosfls' so you
need not enter any keyboard strokes to flash M3291 again. Once
complete, keyboard will work again.

Please remember that .rar files contain all the files needed for the
installation of the IPMI card, but the .bin and .sdr files are used
for flashing the card.

Hi

You may check some jumper on the target card. Jumper would be labeled as WR EN, change its position to enable if it is disabled, this is important. Hopefully the error you are getting will be removed.
Secondly try to do it using DOS instead of Linux(suse).
