Replace or repair noisy 8500

I have a 3-year old 128M 8500. Recently, the fan has started getting
noisy, making a growling/buzzing noise. I've cleaned it, but no change.
Mounted in this case, it is 'hanging' underneath the board, which is
horizontal. It's sort of built into the heatsink, so I don't know how
easy it is to replace.

Alternatively, what is the equivalent, or maybe one step up card
today? I'm not into gaming or overclocking, so something at least
equivalent is good enough for this 4-year old computer (P3/1G).

Hi
Remove fan from heatsink(usually 4 small cross headscrews on corners
of fan)
Give fan a clean (and heatsink)
peel back sticker from back of fan
drop a drop of light oil in the hole in the centre of the fan,try to get it only in the hole
put sticker back on(which may not stick if you get oil elsewhere but the hole)
Put back together,see if its cured it

Or he can do what I did with my 9600xt and take the fan out and replace
it with an old cpu fan which was quieter, though I'm not sure it's as
efficient. ;-)

I don't know how easy it is to fit though, if I remember rightly the
original heatsink is glued on??

You could always get a 9600xt on ebay for £40ish if the wallets a bit thin
as 8500 are a bit thin on the ground...

I have an 8500 where the fan siezed up. I just took the fan out and left it
that way. Has worked fine for years without fan.
